A sacred sacrament by car. welcomes long line for drive-thru communion

Pastor Kevin J. White doesn’t normally deliver communion in the parking lot of his church. But on Sunday he found himself leaning over a folding table with a white linen cloth covering it, greeting worshipers who came by car to receive the sacrament.

Social distancing restrictions forced the New Zion Baptist Church in Elizabeth to close and discontinue in person religious services.

“We have service online, prayer group, and bible study and we were looking to be more creative,” said Takisha Knight, church trustee.

Drive through communion

Social distancing and safety procedures are strictly followed. No one gets out of the cars and communion is handed out on plastic trays that are cleaned after each use.

Communion is in a plastic bag and safety gloves are changed regularly. This holds up the line but not one car horn sounded.

A wafer and grape juice were given representing the body and blood of Jesus Christ. “Everyone receives the lord’s blessing,” said Knight.  Read full article here
